Carol Martling's portfolio focuses on one spectacular image of Ellis Island, the exterior architecture that today is a museum that tells the story of those families who came to live in the US.  Ellis Island is located between New York and New Jersey as one of the ports of for individuals and familes to imigrate to the US.

Ellis Island is actually part of New York and New Jersey as it is on the New York Harbor that these two states share.
It all began on June 15, 1987 for Ellis Island's new arrivals. Most immigrants entered the United States through New York Harbor, although there were other ports of entry in cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Francisco, and New Orleans.
The great steamship companies like the White Star, Red Star, Cunard, and Hamburg-America Lines also played a significant role in the history of Ellis Island and immigration as a whole.

First and second class passengers arriving in New York Harbor were not required to undergo the inspection process at Ellis Island. Instead, these passengers received a cursory inspection aboard the ship, theory being that if a person could afford to purchase a first or second class ticket they were affluent and less likely to become a public charge in America due to medical or legal reasons. However, regardless of class, sick passengers or those with legal problems were sent to Ellis Island for further inspection.

This scenario was far different for third class passengers, commonly referred to as “steerage.” These immigrants traveled in crowded and often unsanitary conditions near the bottom of steamships, often spending up to two weeks seasick in their bunks during rough Atlantic Ocean crossings. After the steamship docked in the Harbor (typically along the west coast of Manhattan) steerage passengers would board a ferry to Ellis Island for their detailed inspection.

This Raw Bar Mural painted at 10 Hayne Street is so beautiful as a captured image. And also the time of day that made the painted image next to the address so contrasting and stunning. Midnight Inn's lovely screened porch allowed the Inn keeper, Angela Tolley, to serve fine desserts for the guests to enjoy and keep everything in a somewhat cooler environment. As her photographer to capture the personality of this fine Inn, I also knew the stories of very famous people in the film industry who would rent out the entire mansion while they were doing a film in the area.Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"   Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

This image was shot by Carol Martling for one of her favorite clients, Acanthus Design.  The owners also became close friends. Deborah and Ted's shop Acanthus Design was the most unique and high end furnishing in this area, and had wonderful historic pieces of furniture.   Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"   Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

This image is almost magical in the timing of the shoot. It is by far my most beautiful full beach scene of all beaches I've captured from Savannah, Charleston, Marblehead, Boston, Miami and Coastal & Southern Georgia.

Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"  Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

This view was captured from the third floor deck of the same brownstone home patio as is Image #9.  This is looking to Boston Back Bay Boston with an amazing ivy and trees appearing to have attached to a brownstone directly in the view. You may desire to purchase both to hang together.

What you are viewing is a wall of ivy on a building and then tall trees that appear to have attached to the ivy. It creates the impression that Back Bay Boston is sitting on the top of this tall hill of landscaping!

One may choose to own this pair of curated images as they are stunning hanging together in a home, office, store, or commercial location showing the summer beauty in Boston.  Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"   Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

The Glowing Gazebo is a Versace designed element that he had added to the property, along with the lap pool and the South Wing. This image is my favorite of the entire collection for everything it represents and it has the msot sensational mosiacs inside the circle.  Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"   Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

This peek to St. Simons Beach is a walk through grasses and tall reeds.  St. Simons is such a calming town, and has great dining, casual shops and a nice vibe.   Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"   Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

Carol Martling is the Architectural Photographer who captured all these images - This portfolio was created from 1998 - 2012 and is focused to tell the stories of Savannah and Atlanta + Coastal & Southern GA, Charleston, Miami, Boston and one very special image of New York.  There are plantations, ruins, waterfront views, the cuisine of the cities, significant homes of distinction, views and peeks to private gardens, and the customs and charm in the unique lore of each city.
