Savannah is all about voodoo, ghosts that move objects in the night, and the many films shot in Savannah. There are hotels and restaurants when I was living in Savannah that told me their stores of wine bottles in their racks moving on their own. And the little girl ghost that visited many guests in a particular room of an old hotel on East Broughton Street.  And so many films, their producers, and their actors were spotted in Savannah and many wondering where they were staying.  I learned that as you will read below.  The films shot aroind Savannah were 1974 The Longest Yard .. 1989 Return of the Swamp Thing .. 1989 Glory .. 1994 Forrest Gump .. 1997 Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil .. 1999 The General's Daughter .. 2000 Bagger Vance starring Robert Redford .. 2010 The Last Song .. and 2015 Dirty Grandpa.

During the filming of Clint Eastwood's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Clint rented Midnight Inn.  And the same for filming of Bagger Vance, Robert Redford rented Midnight Inn.  Carol Martling was close friends with Angela Tolley who owned Midnight Inn. Angela never told anyone of the film producers and actors who rented her property. They could reach the mansion through the alley by driving into the garage.  And then they took the door into the pool courtyard up the stairs to screened porch into the mansion. Angela named her property Midnight Inn to honor Clint Eastwood's movie.  The two pastry images, the pool image, and the porch image in this Savannah collection are within Midnight Inn.  Images like this carry such great memories.  As the photographer, I was very good friends with the owner Angela Tolley and we held my daughter's graduation party from Savannah College of Art & Design in the pool courtyard and members of my family were guests of Midnight Inn fur that event.

Savannah's Granite Steps Inn has an incredibly beautiful curve to the front entry steps.  That lovely curve against the very white exterior allows the Inn to decorate for various seasons and be stunning each time.

the Gastonian Inn's front steps had the look of timeless beauty as the ivy grew on the rail, and no matter how warm Savannah may be on the summer's day, the site of these steps always had a cool look.  This Inn had two buildings and your see the two buildings in a twilight image in this collection.

This image is so representative of this unique shop of historic furnishings as well as fine tapestries, and accessories. The stop was nestled in the Historic District of Savannah and James Morton's taste was next to none in antiques.  He often photographed with me on particular assignments where the properties were historic.  He also took me to view many southern Georgian locations to include in my portfolio and important images of the area.

Acanthus Design window dressing was so beautiful day or night because the owners Deborah and Ted knew exactly what to purchase, and how to position the furnishing for maximize view through the full glass window. Their shop existed between 1998 until 2004 when they decided to move back to Germany.

This live oak tree on Jones Street bending towards the street is almost magic in its composition.  Of all the tress I captured, this was my favorite photograph of a live oak tree. on a residental street.  This was spring or summer and located on Jones Street.

This Hall Street home is very shaded and welcoming in summer as a very traditional home design for this Historic District. And what is so magical about Savannah is tha so many of their gardens are visibly for the passerbys to enjoy.

James Morton's garden has been the jewel of Historic Savannah for a long time.  He bought the home and the neighboring property and turned it into a master garden starting when he was just 25 years old.  His garden and talent was often visiting by large tour groups, and also has been featured in several books about Savannah.  And a few films were shot in his home and garden as one main character had this portrayed as his home.

James Morton has been known throughout Savannah as a high level garden designer in the south.  I called him Jim Morton and he was my very close friend.  He also went wih me on several occassionl to teach me about the real treatures within that region and we also went to Charleston.  He was wih me on some of my public shoots to various plantations and estates, as well as south to Jekyll Island to show me many ruins of old plantations.  His help and advise was invaluable to my education about life in the South and especially in Savannah.

This grave with Mother carved on it is in the historic section of Bonaventure Cemetery.  Savannah has so much mystic, voodoo practitioners, and ghost sightings in some old inns.  That is part of the charm of Savnnah.  Those who are famous and buried in Bonaventure Cemetery:

OSCAR WILDE. 1854–1900    NOBLE W. JONES. 1723-1805    MARY TELFAIR 1791 – 1875   MARY HOOVER AIKEN 1905–1992   LITTLE GRACIE 1882–1889    JOSIAH TATTNALL III 1795-1871    JOHNNY MERCER 1909–1976    JACK LEIGH 1949–2004.    Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"

This is a twilight view to Acanthus Design, a shop owned by my friends Deborah and Ted.  Deborah had such style in her selections of items to carry and she was a wizard with layout and window design, pillows, furniture, and stunning lighting that the window passerbys were encouraged to stop and make a mental note to come back the next day when open to shop.   Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"   Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

Midnight Inn's lovely screened porch allowed the Inn keeper, Angela Tolley, to serve fine desserts for the guests to enjoy and keep everything in a somewhat cooler environment. As her photographer to capture the personality of this fine Inn, I also knew the stories of very famous people in the film industry who would rent out the entire mansion while they were doing a film in the area.Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"   Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

Everywhere in the Historic District gardens are a joy to view through their wrought iron gates or wooden fences.  Their owners take real pleasure in overhearing comments of passerbys enjoying what they have created.   As the photographer to capture this image, I also knew the owners at that time and felt very lucky to be asked to shoot their garden. I met many individuals in those years living and shooting their homes and  for their business properties.

This image was shot by Carol Martling for one of her favorite clients, Acanthus Design.  The owners also became close friends. Deborah and Ted's shop Acanthus Design was the most unique and high end furnishing in this area, and had wonderful historic pieces of furniture.   Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"   Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

The Gastonian Inn is actually two buildings as seen here with a lovely garden in the middle visable to the passerbys who are delighted to catch a peek at the garden between the two inn structures.  The building is a natural stone color in daytime and at twilight it is seen as bluish in images.  This image has hung in my home wherever I lived, since 2002.

Angela Tolley's inn called Midnight Inn was named for the film 'The Garden of Good and Evil' producer Clint Eastwood.  Clint and family rented the entire mansion while filming in Savananh and surrounding areas.

Angela was very connected to the film community and Robert Redford also rented the entire property when producing and directling his 'Legand of Bagger Vance' in Savannah and surroundings.  I had just shifted from being a amateur photographer to then being hired by the best arceitects in that area to capture their home interiors and exteriors for their portfolios.

‘The Legand of Bagger Vance’ is a film starring Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron. It was directed and produced by Robert Redford. The movie is based on the 1995 book by Steven Pressfield of the same title. The film is set in 1931, in Savannah, Georgia. It is about a golfer who is trying to recover his game, as well as his life, and gets help from a mystical caddy.  Mystical is quite the norm for Savannah.

When the U.S. Army arrived in 1849 to establish a new post on the western frontier, few of the officers could afford to bring their families out to such a remote and lonely command. A thriving community of soldiers, officers, and their wives and children grew as the region gained in its importance. The early log cabin style quarters on Officers Row were eventually replaced with larger and more elegant residences, better suited to the status of their occupants.  From the last decades of the 19th century until World War II, Officers Row was the setting for a vibrant social scene.

By the early 1900s, visitors to the Row extolled the luxurious ambience of the tree-lined boulevard in front of the ”handsome… dwellings, with beautifully kept grounds, all abound with roses, and with jets of water playing on all the lawns.”

This is an iconic image in Savannah as is the most intricate fountain in Savannah and high on the list for most beautiful fountains in the US.  It is located in Forsyth Park, the park that extends between the Historic District and the Victorian District.   Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"  Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

Another image with cake at Midnight Inn overlooking the pool. This entire Inn was rented to the producers or actors of various films that were created within Savannah and neighboring areas.  That includes Clint Eastwood and also Robert Redford when both on this area for their filming. Clint with Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Robert Redford in the filing of Bagger Vance.  Savannah is so perfect especially when a film maker takes into account the ghosts and spirits many people think they feel in such old structures.   Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"  Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

James Morton was the photographer my best friend and he also was a great photographer as well as Savannah's legendary landscape designer.  His garden in Historic Savannah was featured in many books and also a few movies as well as his historic home. And, Jim allowed tour operators to bring groups into the layered garden.  And this garden was shared with passerbys through its beautiful wrought iron front gate.    Large Image Size:  21.75' x 28' image  w/4” borders = 30" x 36"  Small Image Size: 10" x 13" w/3" borders = 16" x 19"   Printed on Fine Smooth Rag Paper.

Forsyth Park is the largest park within Savannah and it is where the Historic District and the Victorian District meet. Savannah College of Art and Design has had a lon tradiion with its annual Art Show in the park.  The park is also for people to throw footballs, and play soccer or just relax on the grass. And this fountain is quite famous for its design.
