Charleston has the harbor, Shem Creek and the Atlantic Ocean in close proximity to the Historic District. So much history happened within these buildings that survived the Civil War. Charleston is all about mystic, haunted graveyards, beautifully created wrought iron gates, oak alees where the live oak trees bend toward eachother on the gravel drivse into the plantations.
And Charleston much like Savannah is steeped in folklore. It's graveyards are said to be haunted. The image in this collection that appears to have a ghost-like figure was my friend Angela Tolley from Savannah who wanted to be photographed in the most haunted graveyard in Charleston which is this graveyard of The Unitarian Church.
This graveyard is where it is suggested holds the grave of Edgar Allen Poe's young love, who was the daughter of a rich man who did not believe Edgar was not good enough for his daughter. Her father was powerful enough to have him shipped up north to another state to get him away from Annabel. She was so sad she wouldn't eat and she died. It is believed that her father buried her in an unmarked grave at the Unitarion Church graveyard. Edger Allen Poe wrote one of his most loved poems called 'Annabel Lee' in 1849. This is thought to be the graveyard where she was buried. It is said that many have seen a women in white frequent this burial ground. Obviously, Angela Tolley, a very good friend, decided to dress all is white as the story that many people think they witnessed a woman in white wandering in this graveyard.
Charleston is also about lovely historic homes in the Historic District of Charleston, great restaurants and shopping, and much entertainment. There are three plantations, Boone Plantation, Magnolia Plantation, and Middleton Place.
And so mnay ways to be on the water - Charleston Harbor, Shem Creek is directly over the Ravenal Bridge in historic Mt. Pleasant, where kayaking mixes with the dicked boats and some move out to this sheltered harbor. And of course you have the lovely beaches and homes of Sullivan's Island. And north is Foley Beach that is known to be great for accomplished surfers.

Of all my harbor shots taken, this is truly my favorite as it captured Charleston Harbor later in the day with all the boats at moorings or on docks. Also the shadows create the contrast and the mystic. This tree is known to be the oldest live oak tree perhaps in the South. It is cherished and protected and shown off to tourists just south of Charleston in a park of its own. You drive down a dirt road as I remember to reach the tree. It's fascinating and powerful because the tree is huge. Many people arrive there each day and there is a gift store on site to memoralize this spectacular tree. #77 'Charleston Most Haunted Graveyard'
#77 'Charleston Most Haunted Graveyard'
The Unitarian Church in Charleston graveyard is considered the most scary and eerily gravesites in all of Charleston. It is thought that the grave of Anabelle Lee was there in an unmaked grave. Edgar Allen Poe wrote the poem 'Anabelle Lee' because of his love for her many years after she was gone. They were young lovers each less than 20 years old, when Edgar was a soldier in Charleston. Anabelle father did not approve of Edgar as he wasn't the right pedagree for his daughter and he had him transferred up north. Anabelle would not eat and finally withered away and died. Her father it is said had multiple gravestones placed together in this graveyard so that Edgar would not know which one was her grave. I have called this Two Neighbors in the oldest area of Historic Charleston. One home baby blue and the other baby pink. You never know when neighbors consult their colors, perhaps not on this street. It is a great picture for that reason and certainly representative of Charleston's character. These two homes are also some of the oldest in the Historic Charleston neighborhood.

#29 'Charleston Cottage and Main House'
Several properties in the Historic District of Charleston have more than one dwelling on their property. At one point in history, the smaller buidlings were the kitchens so that if any fires were to start, the main home would be safe. Most homes have open gates and are proud to allow passerbys to enjoy their beauty, as well as photograph it.
